How to build a capsule wardrobe from clothes you already own
October 15, 2026 · Cas
A capsule wardrobe is a small set of clothes that all combine with each other, often 30 to 40 pieces per season including shoes. You build one by starting from what you already wear, choosing a few base colours and filling only real gaps. You do not have to throw anything away or buy anything new to start.
What is a capsule wardrobe?
The idea is older than the name: a limited number of good pieces you can combine endlessly, instead of a full closet in which you still cannot find anything to wear. Well-known versions are Project 333, where you wear 33 items for three months, and capsules of around 37 pieces per season. The exact number matters less than the principle: everything goes with everything.
Why build a capsule wardrobe?
Because most people own far more than they wear. Research by WRAP (2022, UK) found that the average wardrobe holds around 118 items, and that about 26% of them have not been worn in the last 12 months. A capsule makes choosing faster, helps you wear more of what you own, and shows what is really missing before you buy anything.
How do you build a capsule wardrobe?
- See what you actually wear. Track what you put on for a few weeks. The pieces you keep reaching for are the core of your capsule. Closet analytics in Looqa.ai show how often you wear each item.
- Pick a colour base. Two or three neutrals, such as navy, grey, cream or black, for most pieces, and one or two accent colours. Then almost everything combines.
- Lay down the base. Tops, trousers and skirts, one or two dresses or smart sets, outerwear, shoes and a few accessories. Our capsule wardrobe checklist is a printable starting point.
- Fill only real gaps. Tick what you own. Buy only what is missing and what you would wear at least weekly.
- Test it for a month. Wear only your capsule for a month. What you do not miss can stay stored; what you keep missing belongs in it.
How many pieces per category?
| Category | Number (guideline) |
|---|---|
| Tops | 8 to 12 |
| Trousers and skirts | 4 to 6 |
| Dresses and smart sets | 1 to 3 |
| Outerwear | 2 to 3 |
| Shoes | 3 to 5 |
| Accessories | 3 to 5 |
This is a guideline, not a rule. An office with a dress code needs more smart pieces; working from home needs more comfortable ones.
What do you do with the rest of your clothes?
Nothing has to go. Many people store out-of-season and occasion clothes separately and keep only the capsule within reach. At every season change, look again: what did you wear, what not, and what do you swap. If you do want to clear out the rest, follow our method to organize your wardrobe in one afternoon.
Which mistakes do people make with a capsule?
Buying new basics too quickly, while you already own them in another colour. Building a capsule for the life you would like instead of the life you have. And being too strict: a capsule with one favourite piece that does not combine perfectly gets worn longer than a perfect capsule that does not suit you.
FAQ
How many items are in a capsule wardrobe?
Usually 30 to 40 per season including shoes. Project 333 uses 33 items for three months. What matters most is that everything combines.
Is a capsule wardrobe for men too?
Yes. The principle is the same: a few neutral colours and pieces that go together. A men's capsule often has fewer separates and more shirts and knitwear.
Do I need to buy new clothes for a capsule wardrobe?
No. Start with what you own and buy only what is truly missing. Most people already have the base of a capsule in their closet.
