The cost per wear formula
Cost per wear = (price + care costs) ÷ number of wears
Care costs are optional: dry cleaning, repairs or resoling add to what an item costs you over its life. Leave them out for a quick comparison.
Three examples
| Item | Price | Wears | Cost per wear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter coat | €120 | 60 | €2.00 |
| Trend top | €25 | 2 | €12.50 |
| Jeans | €80 | 100 | €0.80 |
The cheapest item to buy is often the most expensive one to own. A €25 top worn twice costs more per wear than a €120 coat worn sixty times.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good cost per wear?
There is no official threshold, but under €1 per wear is a common benchmark for everyday clothing. Occasionwear sits higher by nature; the point is to know the number and decide consciously.
How do I estimate how often I will wear something?
Think in habits: once a week for a year is about 50 wears, twice a week about 100. Be honest about seasons: a winter coat is worn a few months a year, every year.
Should I include washing and repairs?
For a quick comparison, no. For expensive items that need dry cleaning or resoling, adding care costs gives a truer number.
Can an app calculate cost per wear for me?
Yes. Looqa.ai logs what you wear and shows the cost per wear for every item with a price; a product link fills the price in. It is part of the Free plan.
